Overcoming Anxiety, Insomnia and Stress
A one day workshop based on principles of progressive muscle relaxation

How do you deal with stress?

"To be in control you have to let go"

With the credit crunch most of us are having to deal with more stress than normal. We see the evidence of an inability to adjust to stress through psychosomatic disorders like IBS, addictions, binge drinking, insomnia, anxiety and much more. While much is spoken about the need to relax, little is practiced – and often even less is understood.

The day will cover:

Chronic patterns of tension
How we hold our bodies
The effect this has on creating an imbalance of the Nervous System
The effect this in turn has on our thinking and behaviour
Going back to core principles of relaxation
Learning powerful tools for anxiety management for yourself and your patients

This workshop will look at the stress response through a fundamental understanding of our nervous system, our evolutionary heritage and neuromuscular system. We'll be studying the seminal work of Dr Edmund Jacobson who literally introduced the work "relaxation" into the modern lexicon – and whose system of progressive muscle relaxation is still the reference point for relaxation.

Though first introduced publicly in 1929 Progressive Muscle Relaxation is still a standard approach for several disorders including insomnia. During the workshop we'll learn, experience and practice teaching relaxation skills based on a distilled version of Jacobson's Progressive Muscle Relaxation known as Tension Release Breathing. This rapid method of neuromuscular relaxation has shown promising results as primary or as a supporting method in treating anxiety disorders, stress, insomnia, binge drinking, smoking, Aspergers syndrome, phobias, sports performance and self-expression issues.

The day will be rich with information and chances to practice – and should prove to be personally as well as professionally enriching and insightful. You'll leave having learnt effective and proven methods of classical relaxation which can be taught easily and quickly to clients.
