Frequently Asked Questions

What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is simply an effective way of using our attention and imagination that can have a very powerful influence over our emotions, thinking and behaviour. In hypnosis one focuses one's attention on a particular idea with a sense of positive expectation, engaging the imagination while ignoring all other ideas and information.

It is really becoming "entranced" with a particular idea (e.g. "I'm a chicken" - for stage hypnosis!) and forgetting about everything else for a while. The person under hypnosis sort of climbs into the "bubble" of that idea (e.g. "I'm a chicken"!) and experiences nothing else for a while.

This works because a) they want it to work b) they spontaneously imagine it working c) they ignore everything else and d) because each idea does create a response in the nervous system. For example the idea "SLEEP" does create a certain lowering of arousal associated with sleep (and this can actually be measured). Each word triggers an associated set of feelings, sensations, other ideas, images etc. Hypnosis works by expanding the natural response to each idea and focusing our attention on it - so that the idea "SLEEP" - makes our eyes feel heavy and we feel sleepy. Hyponsis involves the surrender to and enhancement of that involuntary response to ideas.

What is Hypnotherapy?

In hypnotherapy we simply use the natural state of hypnosis (focused attention and imagination on selected ideas) to allow us to influence and change the habitual associations and associated responses of the mind and body. Through this natural state of deep absorption and openness, new thought habits, new emotional responses and new behavioural habits can be introduced deeply into the mind.

Will I be under your power? Will I lose control?

Not at all! You stay in control all the time. I can't make you do anything you don't want to do.

How many sessions?

Stop Smoking is effective in a single two hour session.
Most other treatments can show considerable progress after a single session - however usually an effective treatment (i.e. one that "sticks") takes four to six sessions.

Satisfaction Guarantee

I can't guarantee cures but I do guarantee satisfaction. If you aren't satisfied that your therapist has brought all the necessary skills and efforts to bear in your session you can apply for a refund or another session. (Terms & Conditions apply)

Where can I train in hypnotherapy?

The training college affiliated to Inspired Hypnosis is The UK College of Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy. We offer a one week Foundation Certificate course in Hypnosis - which provides a very solid grounding in hypnosis. We also offer a 3 week (21 days) Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (Hypno-CBT).

Our hypnotherapy training is the leading training in the UK that integrates CBT and hypnotherapy - and has been developed by Donald Robertson, author of several prominent works on hypnotherapy and pyschotherapy including The Practice of Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy, Reslience and The Philosophy of CBT.
